A $95 million facility in Holyoke that was built four years ago for research projects that require intense computing is already at a point where it needs more computer power. Harvard University will be leading a $1.6 million expansion for the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center, which will increase the computing power capacity so that researchers will be able to conduct more experiments faster and more comprehensively. "This expansion is really critical for us, because we have so many things going on ranging from research on the brain to astrophysics to medical informatics that use all kind of computing," said Rick McCullough, vice provost for research at Harvard. The expansion project won't add more square footage to the 90,000 square foot facility. Rather, it's the inside of the facility, where the processing cores (the parts that read and execute program instructions) are held, that will be expanded.
