.--The 2013 Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing Conference has issued a call for participation, inviting submissions for panel discussions, student research posters, birds-of-a-feather sessions and workshops. Additionally, applications are now being accepted for the Doctoral Consortium and student scholarships to attend the conference. Tapia 2013 will be held Feb. 7-10, 2013 in Washington, D.C.
The 2013 conference is the seventh in the series and brings together diverse leading researchers to present state-of-the art topics in the field of computing. The Tapia conference has a tradition of providing a supportive networking environment for under-represented groups across the broad range of computing and information technology, from science to business to the arts to infrastructure. Tapia 2013 is organized by the Coalition to Diversify Computing and co-sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery and in cooperation with the IEEE Computer Society and the Computing Research Association.
Confirmed speakers include Vint Cerf (Google VP and ACM President), Armando Fox (UC Berkeley), Anita Jones (University of Virginia), Jeanine Cook (New Mexico State University), Annie Anton (Georgia Tech), and Hakim Weatherspoon, (Cornell University), among others. The Tapia conference is organized by the Coalition to Diversify Computing, sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery, and in cooperation with the IEEE-Computer Society and the Computing Research Association.
Panel Proposals
Panels can focus on technical areas or issues related to increasing diversity in the field of computing. The goal of a panel is to provide in-depth discussions. A panel proposal should include the panel description, panelists and moderator names, and contact information. Panel proposals must be submitted via www.tapiaconference.org/2013/participate.html by Sunday, Nov. 25. Authors will be notified of acceptance decisions by Saturday, Dec. 15.
Birds of a Feather (BoF) Proposals
A BoF proposal should include an abstract on the topic of the session, the expected audience, and a brief summary on the qualifications of the organizer who will lead the session.
BoF proposals must be submitted via www.tapiaconference.org/2013/participate.html by Sunday, Nov. 25. Authors will be notified of acceptance decisions by Saturday, Dec. 15.
Workshop Proposals
A Workshop proposal should include a description of the workshop, the organizers, and a brief summary of the qualifications of the organizers who will lead the session.
Workshop proposals must be submitted at www.tapiaconference.org/2013/participate.html by Sunday, Nov. 25. Authors will be notified of acceptance decisions by Saturday, Dec. 15
Doctoral Consortium Applications
The Doctoral Consortium provides an opportunity for senior Ph.D. students to discuss and explore their research interests and career objectives with a panel of established researchers in computing. The one-day Doctoral Consortium will take place Feb. 7, 2013 immediately preceding the Tapia Conference. Students must submit research proposals for the Doctoral Consortium at http://www.tapiaconference.org/2013/dc.html. The submission deadline is Monday, Dec. 31 and authors will be notified of acceptance decisions by Monday, Jan. 14, 20013.
Research Poster Proposals
Graduate and undergraduate students are invited to submit poster abstracts that focus on late-breaking research results from current projects or course projects. Posters with multiple authors should identify a leading student author and the abstract should highlight her/his contributions. Poster proposals must be submitted at www.tapiaconference.org/2013/participate.html by Sunday, Nov. 25. Authors will be notified of acceptance decisions by Saturday, Dec. 15.
Scholarship Applications
The Tapia Conference Scholarship Program facilitates attendance of those individuals who would otherwise be unable to attend. The scholarships cover travel, hotel and conference registration. Preference will be given to students and mentors who present posters, panels, or BoFs. Applications will be available Monday, Oct. 15 and the submission deadline is Sunday, Nov. 25. Scholarship recipients will be notified of acceptance decisions by Saturday, Dec. 15.

Tapia, a mathematician and professor in the Department of Computational and Applied Mathematics at Rice University in Houston, Texas, and a national leader in education and outreach programs.
