Berkeley Scientists Discover an "Instant Cosmic Classic" Supernova Supercomputing -- fast networks key to early discovery of explosion

A supernova discovered two weeks ago is closer to Earth - approximately 21 million light-years away - than any other of its kind in a generation. Astronomers believe they caught the supernova within hours of its explosion, a rare feat made possible with a specialized survey telescope and state-of-the-art computational tools. The finding of such a supernova so early and so close has energized the astronomical community as they are scrambling to observe it with as many telescopes as possible, including the Hubble Space Telescope. Joshua Bloom, assistant professor of astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley, called it "the supernova of a generation." Astronomers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and UC Berkeley, who made the discovery, predict that it will be a target for research for the next decade, making it one of the most-studied supernova in history. Campus Champions

On August 29, 2011, Thomas Hauser and Jazcek Braden of the University of Colorado became the most recent Campus Champions to join a long and distinguished list of 98 other Champions. Who are Campus Champions? Campus Champions are campus representatives who serve as a local source of knowledge about high-performance and high-throughput computing and other digital services, opportunities and resources offered through XSEDE. This knowledge and assistance empowers campus researchers, educators, and students to advance scientific discovery. To find out more, please visit https://www.xsede.org/campus-champions.

Educator Spotlight

NASA Offers School and Education Groups Chance to Talk to Space

NASA is offering opportunities for schools and educational groups to speak with astronauts aboard the International Space Station to learn about the challenges and rewards of their work. Members of Expedition 29 and 30, the 29th and 30th crews to live on the station, will be available for question-and-answer sessions from September through March 2012. NASA astronauts Mike Fossum of McAllen, Texas, Dan Burbank of Yarmouthport, Massachusetts, and Don Pettit of Silverton, Oregon, willparticipate in the 20-minute question-and-answer sessions, known as in-flight downlinks. "These discussions are unique opportunities for students to learn first-hand from astronauts aboard the station what it is like to live and work in space," said Cindy McArthur, Teaching From Space (TFS) project manager at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.  For NASA TV streaming video, downlink and schedule information, please visit http://www.nasa.gov/ntv.  For more information about the Teaching From Space program, please visithttp://www.nasa.gov/audience/foreducators/teachingfromspace/home/index.html.

Faculty Opportunities

2011 BEN Scholars Program
Application Deadline – September 22, 2011

The National Science Digital Library (NSDL) Biological Sciences Pathway, BiosciEdNet (BEN), invites undergraduate faculty in the biological sciences to apply to become BEN Scholars. The BEN Scholars Program is one of the grassroots outreach activities of the BEN Collaborative of more than 20 life sciences professional societies. The goal of the BEN Scholars Program is to promote the use of digital library resources and student-centered teaching and learning methods in higher education, specifically in biological sciences lecture and laboratory courses, and in research training programs. The BEN Scholars program works both directly with faculty who are BEN Scholars and indirectly, through outreach activities led by BEN Scholars. Outreach activities are aimed at biological sciences faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and middle and high school teachers. Using digital libraries, BEN Scholars learn how to transform lectures and laboratories to be more student-centered and to integrate career exploration and up-to-date science content across fields into existing curricula.  For complete program information and for submission guidelines, please visit the American Physiological Society (APS) online application center at https://www.the-aps.org/awardapps/login/index.cfm.
