OE-Sponsored National Laboratories Professional Development Workshop for Underrepresented Participants (CMD-IT NLPDev) 
June 14-15, 2012 – Livermore, California

The application site is now open for the National Laboratories Professional Development Workshop for Underrepresented Participants (CMD-IT NLPDev 2012), for which the primary goal of this pilot program is to mentor underrepresented participants on successful strategies for navigating the professional ladder and becoming familiar with the various opportunities in computational science at the Department of Energy's national laboratories.   This program is intended for senior graduate students and post-docs, and laboratory professional junior staff from underrepresented groups in the area of computational science:  African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, and People with Disabilities. The workshop will include panels of successful professionals discussing strategies for navigating the professional ladder, effective methods for networking within the lab as well as the broader community, being an effective team member from the perspective of team managers as well as team members, effective communication, and proposal opportunities. A panel of directors will start the workshop with an overview of the computational science research activities at their sites.  Participants will have an opportunity to discuss their research via the luncheon poster session on the first day.  We invite senior doctoral students and junior staff in the broad area of computational science to submit an application. Participant costs will be covered by a grant from the Department of Energy’s Advanced Scientific Computing Research program. XSEDE Staff Earn HPC Innovation Awards

Seid Koric and David Lifka, both XSEDE staff members, received HPC Innovation Excellence awards from International Data Corporation in November. At the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, award recipients Seid Koric and Brian Thomas are project leaders of the Continuous Casting Consortium, a group that works to solve practical problems related to the steel industry. At the Cornell University Center for Advanced Computing (CAC), David Lifka and Paul Redfern earned the award for enabling the use of CAC computing resources in the study of determining new ways to address the effects of the hepatitis C virus. For XSEDE, Koric (pictured here on the left) is a member of the Advanced Research Teams Support group and Lifka (pictured here on the right) is a member of the Systems Operational Support group. High School Student Earns Awards from PSC, ACM for New Keyboard Design

Natalie Nash, a high school student at Vincentian Academy in the North Hills suburbs of Pittsburgh, won the first prize award of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Nash also won a Sponsor award from the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center at the 2011 Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair for her project and then went on to win the ACM honors. She used the simulated annealing algorithm to design a keyboard that is much faster for disabled users than standard keyboards. University of Pennsylvania Graduate Student Wins Award, Time on NICS' Kraken for Carbon Nanotube Research

Christopher Von Bargen, a doctoral student of chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania, recently received the Peter Kollman Graduate Award in High-Performance Computing, which also earned him 1 million processor hours on Kraken, a supercomputer at the National Institute for Computational Sciences (NICS). Von Bargen plans to use the computing time to research the volatilization and selection of carbon annotates by conjugated semiconducting poly(arylene ethynlene) polymers. His work is expected to have an impact on the design of new polymers.

SDSC Unveils Summer Computing Classes for Middle and High School Students

The San Diego Supercomputer Center is once again offering a summer of science and technology courses for students in grades 6-12. With a focus on learning early programming skills, courses will be offering in Java, and Alice, as well as courses in computer security, GIS and app development. NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates Summer Program

Software Safety: Methodology, Practice and Research
May 28 - August 3, 2012 – University of Texas, Dallas

Application Deadline - March 15 2012

The Computer Science Department at the University of Texas at Dallas will conduct a ten-week summer research program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) for ten undergraduate students.  The focus is on "software safety," however, the technology and skills learned by the students have general applicability to research and practice in their future studies. The program  provides a close collaboration with our industry partners. In addition to work on assigned research projects at UTD, field trips to Raytheon, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company, and EDS/HP will be arranged to help the students better understand how software safety is adopted in practice for real-life applications. EU-US HPC Summer School
June 24-28, 2012 - Dublin, Ireland

The deadline to apply to the third international Summer School on High Performance Computing (HPC) Challenges in Computational Sciences is fast approaching. Selected applicants will learn about issues related to HPC challenges and networking with experts in the field, as leading American and European computational scientists and HPC technologists present a variety of topics. The program will benefit graduate and postdoctoral students from European and U.S. institutions who currently use HPC to conduct research. Participation is free of charge to students who are selected and includes accommodations and full board in Dublin. Support for travel costs is also available to students selected to participate and who are from U.S. institutions. Google Summit of Code

Google Summer of Code is a global program that offers student developers stipends to write code for various open source software projects. We have worked with several open source, free software, and technology-related groups to identify and fund several projects over a three month period. Since its inception in 2005, the program has brought together nearly 5,500 successful student participants and over 3000 mentors from over 100 countries worldwide, all for the love of code. Through Google Summer of Code, accepted student applicants are paired with a mentor or mentors from the participating projects, thus gaining exposure to real-world software development scenarios and the opportunity for employment in areas related to their academic pursuits. In turn, the participating projects are able to more easily identify and bring in new developers. Best of all, more source code is created and released for the use and benefit of all. Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Applied Research in Health Information Technology University of Central Arkansas, Department of Computer Science – University of Central Arkansas
Application Deadline - March 24 2012

This Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) project is a nine-week program where students work collaboratively on a wide variety of computational science projects. Ten undergraduate students will be selected to participate in this program, to conduct research with active and experienced research faculty. The students will have the opportunity to interact with computer scientists, medical physicists, and industry personnel. The students will be able to work alongside faculty and graduate students on cutting edge research in Computational Sciences related to Health Information Technology.
